Garcia-kun depicts the life of a Colombian laborer who has come to Japan to earn money for his family back home. Foreign laborers such as Garcia-kun are typically given the jobs least desired by the Japanese and are often exploited as a source of cheap labor. Such work, and the fact that the Japanese tend to view foreign laborers with a measure of prejudice and mistrust, makes their lives in Japan a difficult challenge. But Garcia-kun, a virtuous, honest, and hard-working chap, faces the challenges with grace and humor. (Source: Mangajin)
Excerpts of Garcia-kun were published with English annotations in issues 29, 30, 40, 44, 53, and 60 of the Japanese language learning magazine Mangajin from September 1993 to November 1996.
