Roto faces Kurama in the first round of the Dark Tournament. Kurama has the upper hand as Roto tries to punch him, but throughout the fight Roto calls Kurama by his human name "Minamino Shuuichi". Just as Kurama was about to finish him off, Roto threatens to kill Kurama's human mother, Shiori, if Kurama did not submit to him. This angers Kurama greatly, and he inserted a Death Seed into Roto's body when he was off-guard.
